In 2010 the Friends funded and planted a Knot Garden at the front of the Old Rectory.
Right is a sketched plan of the small knot garden that was prepared for the front of the Old Rectory, the shaded areas represent Box hedging and the areas the hedges enclose will be filled with seasonal plants attractive to bees and butterflies.
Knot gardens were a fashionable and popular addition to the large houses of the past and are recorded as early as the 15th century. The mainly geometric knots were only limited in size and complexity by the imagination of the designer and the depth of the house owner’s pocket.
We hope that our (more modest) garden will brighten and enhance the front of the Rectory and add interest to the Sutton Ecology Centre.
